OUR ED BIEN, A 1939 GRADUATE OF ST. BENEDICTS INTRODUCED FATHER LEAHY WHO IS A 1963 GRADUATE. FATHER EDWIN LEAHY DISCUSSED HOW SUCCESS COMES TO URBAN STUDENTS AT ST. BENEDICT'S PREP.  THE KEYS ARE DEVELOPING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND LEGECY- A CONNECTION TO ALUMNI.  ST. BENEDICT'S PREP CLOSED IN 1972 DUE TO DEMOGRAPHICS AND A LACK OF STUDENTS.  IT WAS SOON REOPENED UNDER FATHER LEAHY AS HEADMASTER AND HAS SHOWN GREAT SUCCESS WITH 98% OF ITS STUDENTS GOING TO COLLEGE.  THE PREP SCHOOL (9TH THROUGH 12TH GRADES) CONSISTS OF 460 STUDENTS.  THEY ALL WEAR SCHOOL UNIFORMS WHICH HAVE TO BE EARNED AND ARE ORGANIZED ALONG MILITARY LINES-  GROUPS AND SECTIONS WITH STUDENT LEADERS AND ASSISTANT LEADERS.  MOST OF THE STUDENTS CANNOT AFFORD THE TUITION, BUT ARE SUPPORTED BY ALUMNI AND LOCAL BUSINESSES.  STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE DECISIONS AND LEARN FROM MISTAKES.  THEY GAIN SUPPORT FROM THEIR CONNECTION TO ALUMNI.  THEY DEVELOP SCHOOL SPIRIT SINGING BOLA BOLA IN THE HALLWAYS.  THEY LEARN TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER DURING VERBAL TESTING, INSURING SUCCESS OF ALL.

TRACY GAVE A VERY ENLIGHTENING PRESENTATION ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN NJ.  SHE IS THE CHAIRPERSON FOR THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING TASK FORCE.  "TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS IS MODERN DAY SLAVERY"  THIS IS WHERE MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE EXPLOITED FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMMERCIAL SEXUAL ACTIVITY OR FORCED LABOR.  IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS AND USE A SUPPLY CHAIN SUPPLIER THAT DEALS IN FORCED LABOR, YOU CAN BE HELD LIABLE.  HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS A FIRST DEGREE CRIME PUNISHABLE BY TEN YEARS TO LIFE DEPENDING ON THE AGE OF THE TRAFFICKED PERSONS.  MONMOUTH COUNTY IS A PRIME AREA SINCE THERE IS SIGNIFICANT BUSINESS IN THE LEISURE, HOSPITALITY, AND RETAIL TRADE.  NJ IS A HUB FOR TRAFFICKING DUE TO ITS LOCATION AND IT USE OF MIGRANT FARM LABOR.  VULNERABLE GROUPS INCLUDE UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS,  PEOPLE IN DEBT, TRANSGENDERS, RUNAWAYS AND HOMELESS YOUTHS, DISPLACED PEOPLE AND ABUSED PEOPLE.

JILL IS AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST THAT WORKS AT HEALTH SOUTH.  NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF ENERGY VAMPIRES THAT WILL DESTROY CELLS RATHER THAN BUILDING THEM UP.  FACTORS ARE: ENVIRONMENT- HAPPY PLACES, DOWNER LOCATION AND PEOPLE- SOME BUILD, OTHERS DRAIN.  MENTAL- NEED TO BE HERE IN THE MOMENT, NOT DWELLING ON THE PAST OR THE FUTURE.  SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING WILL DRAIN ENERGY.  LIVE LIFE FOR YOU.  HOW YOU REACT TO STRESS WILL EFFECT YOUR ENERGY AND HEALTH.  NEED TO FIND YOUR PERSONAL SWEET SPOT AND BE THERE.

ROSEMARIE PETERS IS SERVING HER TENTH YEAR AS MONMOUTH COUNTY SURROGATE.  SHE SERVED FOR 18 YEARS IN VARIOUS MIDDLETOWN POSITIONS TO INCLUDE MAYOR AND DEPUTY MAYOR.  SHE IS A GRADUATE OF RUTGERS SCHOOL OF LAW, THOMAS EDISON STATE COLLEGE AND BROOKDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.  SHE GAVE EXAMPLES OF NOT HAVING A WILL DURING PROBATE, USING THE RICH AND FAMOUS TO EMPHASIZE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS.  IT TAKES TIME AND MONEY TO RESOLVE AN ESTATE WITH NO WILL AS THE 6 HIERS OF PABLO PICASSO FOUND OUT SPENDING $30 M.  JIMI HENDRICS WAS CLOSE TO HIS BROTHER LEON, BUT HIS FATHER AND ADOPTED DAUGHTER GOT THE MONEY.  FAMILY SQUABBLES OCCUR WITHOUT A WILL.  SONNY BONO'S ESTATE WAS FOUGHT OVER BY THREE WIVES, CHILDREN AND A LOVE CHILD THAT CAME FORWARD.  MUCH OF THE ESTATE WENT TO LEGAL FEES.  A "DO IT YOURSELF WILL" CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS.  CHIEF JUSTICE WARREN BURGER WROTE HIS OWN WILL CONSISTING OF ONLY 175 WORDS WHICH CAUSED PROBLEMS UPON PROBATE.  ORAL PROMISES ARE DIFFICULT TO PROVE AS MARLIN BRANDO'S HOUSEKEEPER FOUND OUT.  MUST HAVE ORIGINAL WILL TO PROBATE,  IF LOST, PROBATING CAN TAKE MANY YEARS WITH FIGHTS AMOUNG RELATIVES.  FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER'S MOTHER SUED HER SON-IN -LAW OVER THE ASSETS.

FIRE SAFETY

FRANK CIUFO, SPRING LAKE FIRE CHIEF GAVE A VERY INFORMATIVE PRESENTATION ON FIRE SAFETY.  HE STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF SMOKE ALARMS AND CO DETECTORS, STATING THAT EVEN IF YOU HAVE COMBINATION SMOKE AND CO DETECTORS ON THE CEILING, PURCHASE 2 PLUG INS AND PLACE THEM IN THE HALLWAY BY BEDROOMS AND LIVING AREAS.  THESE CAN BE PURCHASED IN MOST HARDWARE STORES AS WELL AS LOWES AND HOME DEPOT.  IF THE CO ALARM ACTIVATES, CALL 9-1-1, LEAVE THE HOUSE.  DON'T VENTILATE YOUR HOME SO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAN DETECT THE PRESENCE OF CO.  REPLACE BATTERIES ON A SPECIFIC DAY EACH YEAR.  FRANK HAS PICKED BLACK FRIDAY FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.

PLAN YOUR ESCAPE WITH EDITH: EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME

HAVE A HOME ESCAPE PLAN.  PRACTICE YOUR  HOME ESCAPE PLAN. KNOW 2 WAYS OUT.  FEEL THE DOOR WITH THE BACK OF YOUR HAND.  IF HOT, FIND ANOTHER ESCAPE ROUTE.  CRAWL LOW IN SMOKE.  HAVE A SPOT AWAY FROM THE HOUSE WHERE ALL MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD WILL MEET AFTER ESCAPING FROM A FIRE.

IF YOU HAVE A KITCHEN FIRE, DON'T THROW WATER ON A GREASE OR OIL FIRE.  USE THE PROPER FIRE EXTINGUISHER.  IF THERE IS A LOCALIZED FIRE IN THE OVEN KEEP THE OVEN DOOR SHUT UNTIL THE FIRE EXTINGUISHES ITSELF.

WE THANK FRANK FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US AND BOB TANZOLA FOR CONTACTING FRANK TO SPEAK.

Tim Harmon- Chief of Sea Girt's Lifeguards and Gail Winterstella Spring Lake/Brielle Rotary President

Chief Harmon gave a great presentation on how to be safe at the beach.  Lifeguards go through extensive training.  Their first priority is to prevent people getting into trouble in the ocean.  Thus, we hear the whistle getting people to move to safe areas.  Their key job is to help swimmers in trouble, getting them to safety and providing first aid where necessary.

He discussed rip currents in detail and recommended people watch an ABC News program about rip currents where a person drowned this past weekend in Florida.  You can Google this at Swimmer's Death in Florida Brings New Attention to Rip Current Dangers.

Key safety tips:
1. Learn to swim
2. Swim near a lifeguard
3. Swim with a buddy
4. Check with the lifeguards

Our member, Rich "Ace" Aljian has been a lifeguard in Sea Girt for 27 years and arranged the presentation by Chief Harmon.
